Difficulty swallowing, breathing with your mouth open, and a speech impediment – these are some of the common challenges children and adults experience when living with tethered oral tissues (TOTS). Also known as lip- or tongue-ties, these restricted bands of tissues behind the upper lip or underneath the tongue can make daily life difficult; however, with tethered tissue release in Delafield, our team at Bionica Dental Wellness can help improve one’s quality of life. Contact our office today if you believe that you or a loved one may benefit from this type of treatment.
Tethered tissue release is more commonly referred to as a frenectomy, which is a procedure that focuses on improving the movement of a person’s lip or tongue by releasing the banded tissue holding it in place.
At Bionica Dental Wellness, we use the Fotona LightWalker II dental laser system to provide our patients with a more comfortable, conservative, and faster form of treatment. It’s considered the world’s fastest-cutting laser and is designed for better efficacy and safety. Also, the laser’s dual-wavelength offers optimal precision as it moves to release the tissue, producing minimal bleeding and swelling without touching any healthy tissues nearby.
After treatment is finished, a diamond-shaped wound will appear, which is normal.
Tethered tissue release is a form of treatment that is available for children and adults who have lip or tongue-ties. It’s common for many infants to experience this issue, which can make nursing and/or bottle-feeding increasingly difficult for the baby and mother. However, even if signs do not occur during infancy, this problem can arise in children, teens, and adults.
A tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) occurs when the frenum or tissue is attached to the underside of the tongue as well as the floor of the mouth. If it is tight enough, the restriction can inhibit proper movement, making it difficult for a child or adult to eat, speak, or breathe. With tethered tissue release, the tongue-tie will no longer be restricted once the dental laser is used, allowing for a wider range of motion.
A lip-tie is when the frenum behind the upper lip is attached to the gums, causing restricted movement that can lead to mouth breathing, poor eating habits, and even a gap between the upper front two teeth. Once this band of tissue is treated with tethered tissue release, though, the lip will be free to move, effectively reducing these problems.
Less common is a cheek-tie, also known as a buccal tie. This type of tie occurs when the buccal tissue connects the inner cheek to the gums. This can develop along the upper or lower arch and is often identifiable by a white band when the cheek is pulled back. Using the Fotona laser, a cheek-tie can easily be released, allowing for improved movement that ultimately minimizes potential jaw pain and discomfort throughout the neck and shoulders.
A child or adult who undergoes tethered tissue release can expect many great benefits, including:
