What is Homeoblock?
Homeoblock is an oral appliance that is used to treat individuals who have improperly developed oral structures that inhibit proper breathing while asleep. Similar to a retainer/expander, it is designed to widen a person’s upper jaw and encourage it to move forward. This allows the lower jaw to also move in the same direction, creating a more elongated bite so that proper airflow and tooth alignment are achieved.
How Does Homeoblock Work?
The Homeoblock appliance is to be worn 10-12 hours each night for a designated amount of time (i.e., weeks, months). Over time, the device applies gentle pressure on the bones and ligaments so that the upper jaw will begin to widen, effectively changing its size and shape and addressing the issue of poor craniofacial development. This also allows teeth to move into proper alignment, so they come together correctly to create a healthier bite.
Additionally, a process known as epigenetic signaling occurs, which is the body’s ability to grow new bone and promote positive changes throughout the facial structure, all of which work together to make breathing and swallowing easier.
