It may be cute and sweet when you see your toddler sucking their thumb. Many children turn to this coping mechanism when they feel afraid or unsure. Others do it simply because they’re bored. Although it may be a habit they continue to practice during these few years, allowing them to continue once they enter school can be problematic for their smile. Read on to learn what kind of problems can form as a result of your child’s thumb-sucking.

Thumb-Sucking: What Problems Can Arise?

Most experts believe that “normal” thumb-sucking takes place between birth and toddlerhood. During this time, there is not much to be worried about in terms of their teeth and oral development. However, while many children stop sucking their thumbs between the ages of two and four, others continue until they reach school-age years (or later).

Allowing your child to continue this bad habit can lead to serious developmental problems with their smile and facial structure, including:

  • A poorly aligned bite (i.e., underbite, open bite, overbite)
  • Enamel wear and tear on certain teeth
  • Speech impediment
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • Improper jaw development
  • Asymmetries with facial structure

If your child develops any of these issues, there is a good chance that their dentist will recommend advanced treatment to address the problem. For example, orthodontics may be required to fix a misaligned bite.

How Can You Stop Your Child From Sucking Their Thumb?

If you want to avoid these issues altogether, you’ll need to establish firm rules to get your child to give up this bad habit. Fortunately, dentists have many tips that can make this process less stressful and painful for you and your child. You can:

  • Replace their comfort mechanism (their thumb) with something else, like a stuffed animal or toy
  • Offer praise when they do not suck their thumb during a time they normally would
  • Make your child aware that they are sucking their thumb, as many do not realize they’re doing it
  • Keep their hands busy by giving them a book to hold, a toy to play with, or a healthy snack

There are additional ways to curb thumb-sucking, so don’t hesitate to talk to your child’s dentist. With a little help and encouragement, you’ll keep their smile growing and developing healthily.
